Snail Walk Zandvoort

No beach, beach bars, gambling halls or fish palaces on this hike. Snail Walk Zandvoort has nothing to do with the time-honoured seaside resort. At most, you can see the village church and the high seaside flats from the top of the Rozenberg. By then you are long in the middle of the dunes and have already completed a nice climb. It can be busy at the Zandvoortselaan entrance to the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes, but once off the beaten tracks you will hardly encounter other hikers. From the 36m-high Rozenberg, you follow a sandy trail to the next peak: the one-metre lower Appelenberg. A steep and loose sandy track takes you to the Ezelenvlak. The route passes the visitor centre. Take a walk inside, the building alone is worth a visit. For those who want, there is a good break spot at De Oase. The next part of the trail goes through the Vinkenveld. You follow the Verlengde Oosterkanaal for a while, which looks like a meandering stream here. Past Panneland, we walk along the many little canals that the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen are so famous for. Wonderful, you can wander around freely here. So on this trail we choose the smaller paths, so it's smart to load the track on your phone or GPS device as well. Beyond the Hazenhoek, the route crosses the large Middenveld; it feels like you are walking across an African steppe. The tail end of this hike is perhaps the prettiest: from a high, long ridge of dunes, you look out over the plain on your right and a substantial pool of cormorant islands on your left. You overlook the Renbaanveld and wonder: did I see more people or fallow deer today?
