Snail Walk Amstelveen Middelpolder

Imagine that you are standing in the middle of meadows surrounded by cows. You can see the Johan Cruijff Arena, the Rembrandt Tower and the encroaching skyscrapers of the Zuidas. This Snail Trail gives a wonderful sense of contrast. From the university campus of Uilenstede you walk up the Kalfjeslaan, which is a former toll road between the Amstel and the Amstelveense weg. On maps from the Golden age (16th century) the road was called 'Loopveld'. You follow the dike of the Amstelveense Middelpolder, because here you can walk unpaved. At -5.1 metres the Middelpolder is clearly below sea level and this you will see when you reach Bankrasweg where the grassy banks of the Amstel on your left are a lot higher than the deep polder on your right. For the first few kilometres you walk through Amstelveen's recreational zone. Then suddenly the walk changes as you step into the meadows and cross via simple bridges and stiles some boggy grassland. Once you cross the wide ditch 'Machinetocht' using the rope ferry you leave the meadows. Eventually you reach the Amstel at the old pumping station on the dike. Here you follow the shell-paved towpath along the river until you reach the café the Klein Kalfje where you can have a drink to recharge for the last stage back along the grass dike of the Middelpolder. Please note that this walk is not possible during the bird breeding season ( 15th March - 15th June ).
